8th March 2012 at Abbott Lodge Farm, Clifton, Penrith, Cumbria by kind permission of Steven Bland.
Abbott Lodge is a 230 acre tenanted farm on the Lowther Estate. They are currently milking 270 Jerseys, of which some of the milk is used to make ice-cream for the farms onsite cafe. The latest investment on the farm has been a new calf rearing shed, which Steven undertook a lot of research into before committing to his final design. The calves are reared on an automatic feeding system in groups before being weaned into the system. Heifers reach their bulling weight by 14 months as they want them to be calving at 2 years of age. They are on an all year calving pattern.
