THIS on-farm event, run by ADAS on behalf of Defra, will highlight both the welfare and economic benefits of correct management during the dry period and the transition to freshly calved.
Advice on cow survival at calving with the emphasis on calving skills and when to seek veterinary advice will be provided, along with basic husbandry and building design.
Where: Myerscough College Farm, Bilsborrow, Preston, Lancashire PR3 0RY
When: Thursday Nov 5th
Time: Starting at 10-15am (morning session) 1-15pm (afternoon session)
This is one of 14 events organised on commercial dairy farms throughout England to promote best practice in managing dairy cows around calving via practical on-farm seminars and discussions.
The presentations by ADAS specialists will be delivered as part of a walking tour looking at different groups of cows at each stage of management.
The events take place on commercial dairy farms to provide the opportunity to see cows at different stages of lactation and to discuss the practical management issues relating to nutrition and cow health. It is advised that anyone attending should bring clean foot wear capable of being dipped. The programme is repeated in the afternoon session.
